The Heart Tree

On our last morning in Hailey, E and R took us to a delightful riverside park with fine views of the surrounding mountains and a well-laid, dappled path through open woodland.

One of the largest trees, a cottonwood, had stones of all sizes placed within its deeply-grooved bark. Some of the stones were roughly heart-shaped, while others had just appealed to the people who had added them to the tree. The simple message, "just love," on this tree was a much-needed antidote to the poisonous, caustic verbiage spewed by one of the presidential candidates yesterday, and many days before that, as well.

We returned to Boise this afternoon, and after a last full day in this engaging city on Tuesday, will return to Bellingham with grateful hearts for the warm hospitality and sunshine we've enjoyed in southern Idaho.
