Lake Chilwa

The lake used to be much more extensive in centuries gone by. The island in the middle is an old volcanic remnant (Chilwa or Chisi island) and would be an interesting place to visit, but unfortunately, not on this trip.

We are on Tundulu hill today - another alkaline volcanic complex. It is heaving with wildlife of all descriptions, the trees alive with tropical birdcalls, the air full of giant colourful grasshoppers. The extra is one of them: an aptly named 'Trumpeter Hornbill'.
