Yes, the dreaded fruit fly, red eyed to be exact. Drosophila melanogaster. Anybody out there remember dealing with them in biology class, breeding them to see if red eye or dark eye was genetically dominant? Straight wing or curly wing? It was an excellent way of understanding Mendelian genetics.
But I digress. Right now we have a swarm in our kitchen due to the rotting crab apples on the tree by our front door. We are having unseasonably warm weather (81 F, 27 C) which is prolonging the life cycle of both the fruit and the flies.
I much prefer them in the lab!
