The Maharaja's Well

High up in the Chilterns is the village of Stoke Row, an unlikely place to find a magnificent structure like this. It is called the Maharaja's Well and it was given to the village by the Maharaja of Benares in 1864 as a thank you after a resident of Stoke Row had many years earlier been instrumental in providing water to a community in India. The well is 368 feet deep and was dug by hand. Stoke Row was the childhood home of my maternal grandmother, and while there we found the grave of her parents, my great grandparents.
We were spending the day with son and d.i.l. We visited Nuffield Place, the former home of Lord Nuffield. A lovely homely place, with lots of interest to Normous whose first car was a 1937 Morris 8.
Back to their place for a home made curry, an excellent end to a good day.
