Kruger Park, day one, rhino and other animals

Into the Kruger Park.  Almost immediately after entering the park, we saw rhino!

My camera had a good workout, with many photos taken at maximum optical zoom.  In extras, impala (with passengers), which are the commonest buck in the park by a long way; kudu, which with their spiral horns and lovely ears are the emblem of the South African National Parks; warthog, and a lilac breasted roller*.  There could be many more!  We did, briefly, see lion, but not well enough seen to photograph.

*W has a great tale to tell about a lilac breasted roller.  On his first visit to a park, he and his friends had just arrived in the park, and stopped to admire this beautiful bird.  Another car stopped (as you do – if anyone has stopped, everyone stops – it might be lion or leopard!), and the occupants were then heard to exclaim (in best SA accent) “Oh, it’s just another b… lilac breasted roller” and it then drove off!
