North Coast 500 - Day 3: Durness to Ullapool

Went into Smoo Cave near Durness as we left this morning; it's unusual in that the first chamber was formed by sea water but the inner chambers are formed by freshwater.
Being out of season, we could only access the first chambers as no guides were going further in. Our out of season theme continues in that the ferry to Cape Wrath is no longer running either, so we didn't get the chance to go the final extra 12 miles up to the far north west tip of the country.
But the advantage of not doing this trip in the summer means we get to see the country in all it's Autumn beauty. And moody mistiness!
Some very single track roads on this part of the route; great fun to drive, although wouldn't fancy parts of it too much in torrential rain.

Main photo - glorious Autumn
Extras:
1 - Assynt
2 - Ardvreck Castle (ruin) on Loch Assynt
3- Looking west towards Stac Pollaidh
4 - Smoo Cave.
