Muddy water

Along with 12 other people we spent the morning, in a room in Appleby, hands in a bowl of muddy water, washing bits of pottery. It was great fun!

Another session in the ‘Dig Appleby’ Project and we were trying to find bits of medieval pottery from everything that has been dug up so far from spots around the centre of the town. First we had a little talk given by a visiting Archaeologist. She had samples for us to handle and gave us some idea of what we were looking for. Then we all set to with bags of pieces, carefully labelled to identify where each batch came from. Washing the soil off was not very pleasant, but so exciting. Fortunately we had two archaeologists on hand to help with identification. This is part of a bag that Gordon and I washed; there are a few pieces of medieval pottery amongst the newer bits. We were thrilled to find them.
