Bobby Moore.

This is the Bobby Moore statue situated outside Wembley Stadium.
Born in Barking, East London, Bobby Moore played 108 times for England and is the only Englishman to Captain a World Cup winning side.
Bobby was also a hero at my club, West Ham United.
In 1963 Bobby spent 5 months out of the team. It was announced at the time that he had a hernia. It is only after he died it was revealed that he actually had testicular cancer and his close family were sworn to secrecy.
Bobby recovered and a year later Captained West Ham at Wembley to their 1964 FA Cup win.
In 1965 Bobby again Captained West Ham at Wembley to their European Cup Winners Cup success.
in 1966 Bobby climbed those famous stairs at Wembley once again to meet The Queen and receive the World Cup.

On the 14th February 1993 Bobby publicly announced he had Bowel cancer.
10 days later Bobby Moore died at the age of just 51.
It was the day before my Birthday.
I still recall going up to West Hams ground on my Birthday and the gates were absolutely covered in scarves, shirts and tributes. There was a mass of people there and I vividly recall a Fire Engine stopping and a big strapping Fireman step out, place a scarf on the gates and crying his eyes out.

West Ham retired the No 6 shirt (the number Bobby wore) following his death and named a stand after him.
After our move to the Olympic Park they named one of the new stands after him also.

The inscription on the statue reads:-
“Immaculate footballer, Imperial defender, Immortal hero of 1966, First Englishman to raise the World Cup aloft, National Treasure, Master of Wembley, Lord of the game, Captain extraordinary, Gentleman for all time”
