Greener

Skopelos Island's pet name for itself is Green-on-Blue, rather unfortunate now that the world understands that to be an Afghani attack on coalition forces. The phrase was chosen to conjure up the image of the green forest reaching all the way down to the blue sea, which it does. The island is 80% wild forest and because of that has apparently been classified as Greece's greenest island, but this classification has absolutely nothing at all to do with environmental friendship.
All our rubbish used to be piled up in a heap and burned. This practice ceased in 2007 when the equivalent facility on neighbouring Skiathos caught light during a notoriously hot and dry summer when wildfires were springing up all over Greece and there were significant fatalities.
Thereafter trash has been put in landfill but this proved to be rather less than clever when the great flood of 2015 littered beautiful olive groves with unprecedented quantities of old cathode ray tube TV sets and computer monitors.
Finally we have a recycling plant! The buildings are not yet built but the collection has begun and I was very happy to drop off a sample collection of plastic and cardboard. It appears they will accept anything recyclable, they ask only that glass is separated from the rest of it.
Hurrah!
Apologies for the poor quality photo - I was just too excited!
