St Peters church was started in 656 by Benedict Biscop. The part remaining from that time is the tower on the right of the picture. St Bede would have walked through that door and so have I. I am not a very religious person but they have a really good cafe and great guides to show you around the church. There was a monastery on the site that Bede was schooled at from the age of 7. He came from Sunderland and was an orphan.
