Smuggling Collage

This week is smuggling week in Christchurch, and I staffed the Priory museum while a local author gave a talk about smuggling in the town.  Warner's Window is where an nineteenth century historian used to look out of the Priory schoolroom as a boy and watch wagons of spirits travelling across Hengistbury Head.  The Priory weathervane, according to legend, was turned to point in the direction where the Revenue men had been spotted.  The lit candle in the staircase was the signal that contraband could safely be landed.  I was brought up on the local smuggling tales, so I'm loving all this.
