Dunoon Herald

This rather striking plaque has recently been erected on a wall in front of a new block of flats in Argyll St - the main thoroughfare - in Dunoon.   It is one of five cast iron images that tell the history of the spot, next to the Burgh Hall ,which is also in the process of restoration.

The Dunoon Herald - with its name presented  presented in reverse type just as it would have been when set up for printing - was one of two local papers in the town in the 19th century.  The other - the Dunoon Observer & Argyllshire Standard (itself a merger) -  is still going but the Herald (the full title of which was the Dunoon Herald and Cowal Advertiser)  ceased publication in 1965, having lasted just under a century.
