Impeller

This small looking thing is an impeller of a sea coolingwaterpump.
This impeller has a diameter of about one metre and it pumps about 8.5 cubic metres (8500 litres = 2245 gallons) of sea water per second throug the cooling system of one production unit.
The impeller is made of titanium, so is the drive shaft, because normal stainless steel erodes much too fast in the kind of sea water we use; the fact is, the water contains a great amount of sand.
The impeller is running in a concrete housing.
The electric motor that drives the pump is also huge, it uses approx. 1000KW (is 1 MWattt) of power....and is about 4 metres high.

It's now being reassembled in the workshop to use at the next major overhaul, it will be used as a spare pump. The rest of the pump is standing in the structure in the background.
Note that also the workshop is in a christmas mood.....
