A short walk in the Corbières

Today was another ridiculously lovely day, temperature 22C with not a breath of wind. So we decided to go for a walk in Bouïsse. Gaily we set out and it was only as we went deeper into the remotest part of the Corbières that the petrol warning light came on. Some hasty calculations suggested that we didn't have enough petrol to get to our destination and get to Lézignan to fill up afterwards. So we had to do a bit of a detour along 15 km of dodgy mountain roads to Mouthoumet. We were quite relieved to find the unattended petrol pump there was working -- it's the only source of petrol for miles around. Thus refreshed we finally got to Bouïsse, 35 km from home, an hour and a half after we set out.

So our walk had to be somewhat shortened. We still got to the top of the Milobre de Bouïsse though. There are amazing views from there; the mountains you can see here are the Pyrenees, and in the other direction you can see the Mediterranean. We didn't meet a soul up there, not even any cows, although we could see them in the distance. Bouïsse is such an isolated place that when we parked the car in the village, nearly every inhabitant found a reason to come out of their house so they could have a look at us. On our return there were no people about, but I counted eleven cats.

Back home we had to do a quick turnaround in order to go to the vernissage of Artistes en Campagne, a collective open studio weekend by a dozen local artists. We didn't stay all that long as we were quite tired and S has an early start tomorrow.
