Sweeps caves and ghosts

The caves were likely hollowed out many years ago to shelter seats  for walkers  to admire the view, sweeps used them to store soot  but tourist guides to Tunbridge Wells in 1839 describe them as dormitories for gypsies.  A local legend tells of a gypsy girl sheltering in the caves during a thunder storm, falling down the very steep hill below the caves and breaking many bones. She tried to climb back up the hill but died on her way up.  In very bad storms, locals tell of hearing a woman's cries for help and one local girl as recently as 2015 is sure she saw the ghost of a women slithering up the slope back towards the caves as she took a short cut on her way home from the pub.
