the coal hole

Today we decided to go the camera world show at the Connaught rooms Covent garden. It was crowded and I was disappointed in what was on display. In so saying my husband did buy a new camera bag. His Lowerpro has died. The zipper has come away from the tape.

Unlike the coal hole at my grandparents house in yorkshire. That was a type of cupboard/outhouse where the coalman put the coal

I often wonder how roads, streets buildings get their names. In this case I wondered about the Pub on the Strand. when i got home I googled it and this is what i found
The Coal Hole occupies what was once the coal cellar for the Savoy Hotel. In the Victorian era, the pub was a ‘song and supper’ club where regulars were encouraged to sing comic songs and sentimental ballads. Gilbert and Sullivan regularly performed here after rehearsals, and the Shakespearean actor Edmund Keane started the Wolves’ Club in the basement for ‘oppressed husbands forbidden to sing in the bath’. However, its real role was less innocent, and involved heavy drinking and ladies of the night. The cellar bar still carries the actor’s name.

on the way back to waterloo Station we ran into this demonstration. Small, but causing traffic Chaos. Wondered who footed the bill for all the police that was involved
