An early celebration of Guy Fawkes Night, also known as Bonfire Night, which in fact falls on 5th November.

On this date in 1605 Guy Fawkes, a militant Catholic, was arrested while guarding 36 barrels of gunpowder intended to blow up the House of Lords, where the Protestant King James I of England (also James VI of Scotland) would soon be sitting.

This was the end to a wide-ranging conspiracy by Catholics to seize power in England.  Those conspirators directly involved in the plotting were caught and put to death.
