The British Column Of Liberty

Today we visited Gibside, a National Trust property situated in the Derwent Valley at Rolands Gill which is about 6 miles south of Gateshead.  The estate used to belong to the Bowes family (ancestors of the Queen Mother).

My photo shows the British Column of Liberty which was completed in 1759.  The column stands at 140 ft high which is taller than Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square.  On top of the column there is a 12 ft tall figure holding the staff of maintenance and the cap of liberty.
