A view from St Swithin

Lest we forget

On Remembrence Day my thoughts are often of my Grandfather who joined the Seaforth Highlanders as a teenager and spent 1917 - 18 on the Western front. He went " over the top " a few times and fought at the Battle of the Marne. He escaped serious injury when hit by shrapnel as the shrapnel hit a canteen in his pocket. Like most men of his generation he never wanted to speak of what he did or witnessed and it's only as I've grown older have I gained any insight as to what he must have gone through. He captured some binoculars of a German officer which i still have.
