Vertical Puddles

The Northumberland Telescope is the oldest of the half-dozen or so optical telescopes situated on Madingley Rise.  Few of them are still actively used for research (with the radio telescopes being more useful from a scientific viewpoint) but rather than demolish them they've been refurbished and made safe enough for the public to use them and are now employed for engagement purposes.  The Institute of Astronomy has a super series of public talks and demonstrations aimed at the interested layman at 7pm on Wednesday evenings during the months of darkness if you're interested.

One notable exception is the 36-inch telescope which is still very much in use, not entirely safe inside and likely to be a future blip.  To understand how remarkable it is, the 36-inch refers to the aperture of the objective lens.
