Beneath Biscay

La Casona

At the start of the 19th Century this hotel/bar was the first home of the new Royal Asturian Institute of Mining and Navigation, providing secondary education in these discplines. It subsequently moved to new larger premises in Gijon. Now it is the home of a small hotel and cider bar 'sidreria'. We used to go here fairly regularly but with so many local sidrerias to choose from our cider bar route continually evolves and this one has fallen by the wayside. It's adjacent to the site of the old roman town wall and inside it has a part of the floor cut away to reveal roman foundations.
