Little Bluestem

This, together with the Big Bluestem, constitutes about 70% of the plant biomass in the native tallgrass prairies. The real prairie begins about a hundred miles west of us. In our county this grass occurs in isolated tufts like this. This is the fall color of the grass which is green the rest of the year. In 2010 the Little Bluestem was adopted as the state grass of Kansas.
