Water Is Life

As I work on this blip I can hear the Pileated Woodpeckers out in our back yard. They have been hard at work on some of the rotten limbs in our oak trees. This male Pileated came down to the bog several times for water breaks this morning, seems that all that pounding can make a bird mighty thirsty! He would sit for a couple of minutes at the edge of the bog, dipping his beak into the fresh water and and then he would tilt his head back to swallow. When his thirst was satisfied, off he'd fly to continue his task. This bird is easily identified as a male by his bright red 'mustache' whereas female Pileated have a black one.
