keep the bees warm

In winter - when the temperature falls below 10dgrees, the bees will not fly but they cluster together to maintain the core temperature at nearly 30degrees!  This takes good food (honey) and muscle action.  It also helps if there are enough bees and I really hope our cluster is big enough. To help them we have put some top insulation above the hive in the roof space.  We used triso super 10 which is quite light and thin but has excellent insulation properties (better than 20cm wool).  I think we will add more insulation when the temps start getting lower. (This is for Abbie who asked me how the bees survive in the winter!).
