The Stone Forest

In Rammang-Rammang, Maros - Makassar - South Sulawesi.

Our last day here in Makassar.
And we came to this place around 9.30am.
We were strolling around, but not all over the place because of time constraints. Our plane wait us at 2 pm, and it takes 45 minutes to go to the airport.

The name "Rammang-Rammang" comes from the language of Makassar, where rammang word means "cloud" or "mist". So rammang-rammang means a set of cloud or fog. According to the story the locals, this place was named Rammang-Rammang as clouds or fog that always go down, especially in the morning or when it rains.

Points of interest in the region is a the stone forest, lake Angel, caves Feathers 'Barakka', cave Palms, Pasaung caves, rivers and villages Berua Pute.


So..we took a walk around this stone forest, took lot of photos. It's a magnificent place..

The Stone Forest is one part of the wealth – Pangkep Maros karst which is thought to be the result of limestone dissolution process also called ” residual karst ” . The stone forest is very easy to find around the rice fields in Maros regency and Pangkep .

The location is easily accessible and is located in the village of Dusun Salenrang Rammang – Rammang . From a distance , it resembles a stone forest park with a wide variety of pandanus and palm trees. Some of the typical formation process of dissolving limestone landscape makes this region a prehistoric unique beauty . The stone forest is not only found in around the village of Salenrang but also can be found in the village of Leang – Leang, Soreang .

Besides having beautiful scenery , stone forest also serves as a water source for surrounding communities , especially in the dry season . Surrounding communities are very dependent on the water source is located in the middle of the woods with a stone down the narrow alleyways and winding . Although the water is slightly brackish because adjacent to the estuary , but people still use for bathing , washing and even for drinking and cooking . In the stone forest, there are at least five sources of water used by surrounding communities.
