‘A fish cannot leave its smelling’

Words of wisdom from Benneth when discussing a bad egg from the Wildlife Service, who luckily we don’t have anything to do with. We tried to share some similar phrases and couldn’t figure out the etymology of ‘you can’t teach your grandmother to suck eggs’. Adrian thought it may be something to do with the childhood practice of sucking the insides of a wild bird egg out in order to dry it out and collect the shell. This practice was unknown during my own childhood.

Benneth’s full name is Benneth Ezekiah Abdullah. I asked about the origin of the different parts of his name and it’s simply that the middle one is inherited from the father and the last one from the grandfather. When a new child is born, names are simply shunted along, so for example one of Benneth’s sons is called Emmanuel Benneth Ezekiah. Girls inherit the same names so one of his daughters is called Drusilla Benneth Ezekiah.

Seems a lot easier than the Spanish way, as I’ve met too many Santa Maria Gloria de Roberto Carlos Reyes Sombreros to understand how that whole nomenclature works.
