Borrowed Colours

Our New Zealand hoverfly is not as colourful as many I see posted by blippers in other countries, but their wings are iridescent in the right light. Furthermore, their glossy metallic thoraxes reflect the colours around them. This one picks up the colour from the edges of the stonecrop leaves.

Today is the first day of our summer. The stonecrop hasn’t noticed and is still wearing its winter colours. And I am wearing three winter layers of clothing.
