Dungeness

M and l went to Dungeness on the Kent coast this bright, clear, Sunday morning. When we got there and hopped out of the car, we were met by 3°C and a vicious, biting wind causing a wind chill factor in double figures. My fingers were totally numb within 15 minutes. The gulls were wheeling and calling out over the skeletons of disused fishing boats adding to the remote and desolate atmosphere, and l think it is that desolation that attracts people; certainly it does me.
Dungeness is reputed to be the largest gravel area in western Europe, flat, with skeletal old boats sleeping out their days, it is a valuable birdlife reserve now. My extras are of an old winch machine that would have been used to haul the fishing boats up after a days fishing and of a group of fishing boats, still in use - note their very stubby appearance.
