Life in Newburgh on Ythan

The textile trade

Last Monday Ceridwen posted a painting of her mother and suggested that others might like to do likewise, under the tag #MothersMonday. So, here is my mother Edna and, as a bonus, her brother Reuben.
They were born in a village the West Riding of Yorkshire; my mother never left and before she married she worked as a silk spinner. Reuben started his career in the village dye-works but was ambitious and soon he was off to India where he managed a woollen mill in the Punjab. This all ended when  he and his family had to flee for their lives at the time of partition. He then worked in textiles in Cairo, where he died.
