Tufty

There is an isolated colony of the Red Squirrel Sciurus vulgaris on Brownsea Island in Poole Harbour, Dorset, numbering several hundred individuals. During the summer they are normally high in the pine canopy, or fast asleep during the warm days so are not often seen.
Imagine my delight to be quietly sitting with my back against a pine tree when this one came down within several yards of me. It didn't seem too bothered even when I was scrabbling about trying to get my long lens on the camera, and was there nibbling long enough for me to get this shot. Perhaps the National Trust can use it as a postcard?
