Sunset on Sim-ku-ee

The Simcoe mountains name came from Indian name Sim-ku-ee or saddle-like dip in a hill.  It is a volcanic field of 24 cinder cones, the tallest which is a little under 6,000 feet. About 40 miles from us, the fertile Yakima Valley is on the other side of this range.

Rock Creek is the largest Columbia River tributary in the state of Washington. The Rock Creek drainage represents one of the most diverse fish and wildlife habitats in south central Washington

Ordinarily the Simcoes blend into the distant landscape, unless, as in this photo they are blanketed with snow. With all the recent snow and cold weather, these unassuming mountains have gained a prominence on the landscape.
