The warrior has been guarding the chief's buried gold for an age. He lies in darkness and silence. After a thousand years and half a thousand years, he is part of the earth and the earth is part of him and he is darkness and silence. But once a year, on the shortest day after the longest night, the rising sun is allowed to send a slender spear of light into the darkness. And the warrior's one eye flicks open.
