Return to the North

By Viking

Colourful day

I had promised my cousins two wee boys that I would take them out bird spotting again during winter (last time fog meant we had to bail and head to the park instead) J (aged 5) doesn't normally come with me and C (aged 8) but was desperate to bird spot! Really he was desperate to do what his big brother does but he pretended well that it was bird spotting he wanted to do.
C was also very keen to try out his first bridge camera, a Polaroid on the birds we spotted. So off we trots after the fog lifted. We headed out to Blacktoft Sands an RSPB reserve near Goole on the Isle of Axholme. the first two hides we went in there was nothing on the water due to it being frozen! We did however see a marsh harrier (see here) and then later a marsh harrier being harassed by a crow. We moved on rapidly (J was easily bored) to the final hide, where the water was still flowing and the birds were feeding. Lots of shots of shelducks and flying swans but liked the range of colour and clarity in this shot - cheerful for a cold winters' day.
