Winklepickers

Hooded crows were dropping things onto the cobble beach on 'Snake Island' at Caol. I assumed it would be the usual mussels. The pavement by Fort William waterfront is littered with them.

Then one flew by with a shell in its mouth and I realised that they weren't mussels. Searching the drop zone turned up a lot of freshly cracked winkle shells. Quite apart from anything else they made interesting shapes.

At least one of the crows had been jamming the winkles into the earth of the salt marsh. Maybe to get the winkle out more easily.

It was good to be outside again.
