The best tool for the job

is an old toothbrush, if what you're trying to do is get good splatter on a painting.

I first learned to us my paintbrush but the drops are bigger and direction less controlled. Using your thumb against a toothbrush creates great directional splatter on the paper.

I have at least 4 in my studio so they seemed a good subject for today's sketch.
