Squall Over Davaar Island

6.7C and quite bright through most of the day. Some squally showers this afternoon. Very windy. Overnight wind Westerly or WNW with mean speeds from mid 40s mph to 54 mph with gusts between 61 mph and 70 mph. This has continued through the day with gusts still reported at 63 mph at 3pm. The forecast is for the wind to gradually abate later this evening before snow showers arrive (maybe not on the coast).

Apothecary7's day off. Unusual that it is a Wednesday. No beach outing today. Maeve the Deerhound was having problems walking in the wind this morning (long unsteady back legs were being blown about!).

In the Coop this morning we listened out for the locals' opinions on the severity of the wind last night and today to add to the factual information from the Met Office website. The consensus was definitely that it had been very bad. Actually we didn't have to listen very hard. It was, as they say, the "talk of the steamie". For example, the checkout person said she hadn't slept a wink waiting for her window to blow in. I think worse than the last named storm. So much for named storms. Maeve was very frightened by our noisy chimney in the bedroom. The living room chimney was starting to get noisy too. Needless to say I was out walking with Maeve at 6am.

After lunch Apothecary7, Maeve and I went for the repeat of the usual morning walking route across the road and round to the park and the harbour and back along through town. The harbour was busy with fishing boats and the fish farm work boats. The new quay is piled high with wood awaiting a ship to pick it up.

Once Maeve was back home and more or less settled we went for a walk. We went round past Aquilibrium then round by the harbour and along the little park by the ferry terminal and out Kilkerran road to Glenramskill House where we turned to come back. Coming back we were brought to a standstill on a few occasions by the strength of the wind.

We came back along the street side of the park and came home through town passing the town hall and the bookshop (closed).

Later Apothecary7 was making a rag rug.
