Selfies from the Brink

Dr. Fabiano

Fabiano is a gynecologist and an obstetrician who works at the county hospital and who also owns a private clinic. The gap between the poor and the rich is huge here in Brazil. Fabiano and his wife, a dentist, have a monthly  income of around 30.000 dollars (that is a conservative guess based on official income figures per occupation published by the government). Even for me as a member of the privileged middle class, these are stratospheric figures. Most of the people I have introduced you to in previous blips (like Ângela or Jakson) live on something around 500 dollars a month.
I know very few members of the upper class. They live in a world of their own, separated and protected from the rest. But Fabiano is a bit different. He created a foundation to assist cancer patients and their families who very often come from far away to be treated in our county hospital, as it is the only public health institution in southern Bahia that offers such specialized treatment. Most of these patients are very poor and have no relatives in town who could take them in during their treatment. Fabiano's foundation provides housing, food and social and psychological assistance for these people.
We met this morning for an early breakfast to discuss one of Fabiano's newest projects: The creation and funding of libraries for our public schools.
