Vimy Ridge Canadian Memorial

Heartbreaking to see how many young men died on this muddy piece of ground. The names of more than 11,000 Canadians, who have no known grave, are recorded around its base. The memorial is visible for miles around which is not surprising as it stands on the top of a ridge and the front wall is 9 metres high, the two "pylons" rise another 30 metres above that. It took 11 years to build.
The whole site is about 250 acres, many of which are left as they were 100 years ago, shell holes trenches and huge mine craters. Time has softened and rounded the edges and vegetation has returned but the ground still oozes horror, the signs warning of unexploded ordinance reinforce this feeling

The memorial is made from a beautiful pale stone that is difficult to photograph against a grey foggy sky. Far better pictures appear all over the internet, take a look at them, it truly is a stunning sight.
