Bonnie

Was surprised to see this statue of Charles Edward Stuart [Bonnie Prince Charlie] in Derby.

Should have remembered my history lessons - his arrival in Derby in 1745 with 6000 troops, on his way south to seize the throne, was a defining moment in British history. If he had pushed on southwards, history could have been much different, but when the King's troops approached from the south he was forced to retreat and was later defeated at the Battle of Culloden.

This statue, by sculptor Anthony Stones, was unveiled in 1995; it was the first equestrian statue to be created anywhere in Britain since the war.
