No 8

one of only two preserved of the many little passenger ferries of this design which served several routes across the River Clyde from 1865 to 1980 when withdrawn. Hard to imagine now but with over 30 shipyards and many docks and quays they carried millions of workers per year across the river. No 8 was the Kelvinhaugh ferry before moving as Fairy Queen to the Forth and Clyde Canal from 1981-97
When I crossed regularly in them in the 1950/60s the landings were slippery wooden/stone steps often twenty depending on tide, no handrails,a few wooden seats and no or little cover from the rain but a cheap adventure indeed dodging the many ships of all sizes wish I'd had a digital camera then
