So today my adapter for M42 mount lens to EOS arrived in the post.  I've been playing all day with the two lenses that I have.  The only problem is that my lenses have a little pin that normally compresses when it's attached to the camera.  The aperture won't work unless the pin is compressed.  Alas, I didn't realise that when I ordered the adapter, and the one I got has nothing for the pin to press against, so the aperture will only be wide.  I've ordered another adapter (thankfully they're not expensive) which should have an edge for the pin to compress on which will make the lenses fully workable on my Canon.
