A few miles away from the popular sludge lagoons on the other side of the village there's a small water treatment facility where the evil done to the water by the locals is undone by filtering, aeration, microbial activity and chemical treatment. Judging by the interior of local kettles there's probably a stage where the refreshed water is augmented by the addition of concentrated calcium- and magnesium-containing compounds but generally the plant does its job and doesn't smell anywhere near as much as larger sewage treatment plants such as Seafield though it's not really something you'd want to live right next to. There are a few houses along the same road as the local plant but they're far enough away to probably only get the odd whiff every now and then. I wonder if the inhabitants of the new estate (built just across the road from the plant over the past twelve years) were fully apprised of the presence of the treatment plant at the time they were making plans to move in? I suppose it's something you can get used to. Eventually.
