Commons speaker backs Judy Murray

John Bercow, Speaker of the House of Commons has come out in support of Judy Murrays controversial plan for a tennis centre on the Greenbelt between Dunblane and Bridge of Allan.

Well, we are gobsmacked.

Why is the Speaker, a man supposed to be impartial, getting involved in a highly contentious planning application in Scotland?

He says to reject it would be a “missed opportunity”.

Has nobody told him that the Lawn Tennis Association has already given £15million to development of tennis around Scotland?  This is a far better legacy than an elitist centre on an upmarket executive housing estate.

So I make no apologies for using an archival photograph today, an aerial shot of Park of Keir taken over 25 years ago at the time of the first planning application. Then it was for 500 houses, later watered down to 300.

It went to a Public Inquiry and got turned down.

The tennis centre is a Trojan horse to get round planning regulations in a Greenbelt.

And now the Speaker of the `House of Commons has thrown his hat in the ring. Carried away on the current wave of tennis euphoria and need for a legacy for Andy `Murray.

Planning regulation and the democratic process, in fact the rulebook and democracy has been torn up, shredded, thrown to the wind.

There are plenty of other spaces around Scotland that would welcome this project and it would certainly benefit more it was near Edinburgh or Glasgow.

We are speechless.
