Synclines, Anticlines, Monoclines...Oh My!

This is a view of the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, several miles east of Hood River, looking toward the west. The snow highlights the numerous downward and upward slopes and folds in the basalt. These synclines and anticlines are ridges and valleys created by ice age lava flows. These flows in the western Columbia River Gorge are among the most voluminous and far traveled lava flows on earth.

Although it is warming up, the gorge still has quite a bit of snow.
