What struck my fancy

The old gatehouse

at the (nearly) former airbase at Sculthorpe in north Norfolk. Nearly because our US cousins use the area for exercises, low flying,  parachuting, mock landings, and camping; at these times the farmer removes his cattle. These exercises occur a few days a year.

In the past nuclear weapons were stored here and carried by B-45 Tornados amongst others as part of the nuclear deterrent system. The base was deactivated in 1992. The residential blocks have been ransacked and valuable metal stolen - wiring, pipes etc, windows broken and doors swinging in the wind, anyone can go in and the experience is eerie as the wind creates noise and the hinges of windows and doors creak and squeak. The odd startled owl can zoom past and out of a window. All gives the impression of occupation . . .

Food for thought.

The extra shows the end of a residential block testifying the American connection.
