The Howitzer

I had to leave the Lake District today to go down to West Wales. As I drove over Dunmail Raise and descended to Grasmere, the icy fog was hanging in the valley and at the foot of all the fells. Helm Crag stood above the fog and The Howitzer was clearly visible on its summit as a grey silhouette. I pulled over to take a photo and, as I did so, the sun broke through the clouds.

The Howitzer gun, with its characteristic upturned short barrel, is formed by rocks on the top of Helm Crag, and can only be seen from the pass of Dunmail Raise. If one is travelling from the other direction, other rocks on the Crag resemble "The Lion and The Lamb", a rock formation that was popular with Victorian tourists.
