Life in Newburgh on Ythan

Another look down the microscope

Another day of foul weather, another session peering down the microscope.

The main photograph shows the tip of the "tongue" of a drone fly, another name for a hover fly. The tongue is equipped with a rake like structure that helps the hoverfly to collect the pollen on which it feeds.

The "extra" is the muscular poison sac of a wasp which pumps venom through the sting when the wasp attacks.
