Caspian tern feeding its young a rather large fish

Wild day at the estuary today with Spikes2013 , blowing a gale, but it stayed fine till we got back to the car. Lots of South Island Pied Oystercatchers, godwits, black backed gulls, shags and 2 kinds of terns.

This adult tern was feeding a large fish to its young one, with difficulty as the wind buffeted them both, and the sea buffeted the young one.

Behind in the distance the SIPOs and godwits are hunkered down on a sand island waiting for the tide to recede so they can get feeding.
