Signs of Spring

Violet, snowdrop, crocus:
three small signs of spring.
Once winter's out of focus,
we'll soon be in the swing

of warmth and longer daylight,
(depression's antidote),
of pegged out washing taking flight,
of walks without a coat.

Snowdrop, crocus, violet:
three small signs of hope,
of rooms no longer firelit
and outdoors full of scope

for gardening and ball games,
for seeing birds make matches,
build their nests and take such pains
to feed each bird that hatches.

Crocus, violet, snowdrop:
three small signs of spring,
when fog and galeforce-blow stop
for every bird to sing.
