Dick's Pics

Another fine mess......

This is what happens when you drop your rod in a fast flowing salmon river and manage to hold on to the end of the line. Hundreds of yards of line unravelled before Gill was able to retrieve her rod and reel. For the next seven hours or so, she tried to untangle the resulting bird's nest until I pointed out the dubious economics of what she was doing. The line replacement cost v the cost of wasted fishing didn't stack up so a good amount of line had to be snipped away and the ends rejoined.

Sometimes when I mention that we're going fishing I think people have a vision of bobbing fishing floats on some placid lake. But wading a fast flowing river in pursuit of salmon on the fly isn't like that. It's potentially quite dangerous in places so you have to think about what you are doing all the time, and that includes how you hold your rod. Still, it's better to see your tackle swept away than to lose your own footing.
